Located on the southern coast of Turkey, the Lycian Way consists of a 540 km waymarked footpath in the Teke peninsula. From the Late Bronze Age all the way into the Byzantine Empire, the Lycians prospered politically, culturally and economically by dominating the maritime trade of the region.
We invite you to join our “Lycian Way East” tour that takes 5 days and a proper footwear for an easy hike!
During our 5-day-tour we will be hiking through the Roman roads, footpaths and mule-roads near the Mediterranean sea accompanied by the breathtaking sights of the ancient cities of Lycia, Byzantine monasteries, numerous Lycian graves and ruins. On the hike “Lycian Way East”, we will discover the trails between Kaş and Antalya, two beautiful cities of modern day Turkey. Olympos Hike
After a one-hour drive from Antalya city center, we will reach Ulupınar, where we will have lunch near the river’s cool waters. After a short but well-deserved rest we will start hiking towards Yanartaş. The mythical tale of Bellerophontes defeating the fire breathing monster Chimaera will be accompanying us as we take our steps towards the mountaintop.
According to one of the great myths of Ancient Greeks, the monster called Chimaera (Khimaira) was a fire breathing monster, part lion, goat and snake.
Tale be told, the Lycian King sends the young boy named Bellerophontes to fight with the fire breathing monster. Bellerophontes braves the fight with his winged horse named Pegassos. While Chimaera attacks Pegassos rises and when Bellerophontes heads down, he hits Chimaera with his spear and buries the monster into the seven depths of the ground. All that is left by the mythical monster today is its everlasting breath that burns through the ground of Yanartaş. After spending some time near the flames that persisted centuries, we will climb down to Olympos.
